Save the date for a special workshop in October!

An exciting workshop is planned for the Fall. Infopeople has prepared a program with CALTAC to help update trustees and on the latest in technology and the implications of the new technology for planning and policy.

Show your support for libraries by attending the CLA/CSLA/CALTAC* Annual Legislative Day at the Sacramento Convention on Wednesday, April 20, 2005. The cost is $25. The event begins at 8 a.m. Please go to cla-net.org, click on events and then click on Legislative Day for a way to either register online or print out a copy of the registration form to complete and mail or fax back.

Why: To show your support for libraries of all kinds, to remind legislators that libraries are important to everyone and to promote priority legislative action.

You can make a difference simply by being a body in a legislator's office. Be reassured you do not have to do any talking. If an opportunity comes up, share why you love your library or some positive experience you have had in a library.

The 2005 Legislative Day position papers will be at cla-net.org soon. When you check in, you will be given a packet of information including a one-page CALTAC sheet showing the priority issues. Also, you will receive a briefing at the beginning of the day as well as a packet of legislative information. One of the documents you will receive is CALTAC's one-page position statement. You will also be briefed by the CLA and CSLA lobbyists.

Talk to your library director (or email CALTAC) about appointments made that day for you to see your local legislators.

Remember, 80 percent of life is showing up!

Due to the continued success of CALTAC's Board Effectiveness Training, we are once again looking for 6 to 8 trustees/commissioners who have had experience training adults. We invite you to apply to become a candidate trainer. One of the joys of learning is to share it! Become trained to give this special training (using a curriculum) to help library boards and commissions become more effective. Please contact Karen Dyer at karen_dyer@caltac.org who can answer any questions you may have and then send you an application. We look forward to hearing from you. Also, if your library board/commission has not yet receivedthis free 3-hour course in board/commission effectiveness, please contact karen_dyer@caltac.org to schedule a training at your library geared toward your trustees and commissioners.

Caltac offers special workshops September 22 at the san francisco public library and september 29 at the cerritos city council chambers - "Technology Survival Skills For Library Trustees And Commissioners"

CALTAC is pleased to announce this exciting new workshop opportunity for library trustees and commissioners as well as for those responsible for or interested in future planning for libraries. "Technology Survival Skills for Library Trustees and Commissioners" is especially designed to meet your needs.

The half-day workshop will cover major technology issues with a non-technical, policy level perspective. It will include trends to watch (what's hot and what's not), how technology will affect traditional library services and also how it will affect library buildings. The role of trustees and how trustees can stay informed about new technology will also be covered.

The instructor is Joan Frye Williams, a well-known consultant specializing in information technology planning, management and marketing.

The audience members in the South will have a special treat -- a VIP tour of the new Cerritos Millennium Library, which will not yet be open to the public but will be substantially finished.

Board Effectiveness Training Needs More Trainers
The CALTAC Board Effectiveness Training is in such demand that more trainers are necessary. WE ARE LOOKING FOR ABOUT A DOZEN SPECIAL TRUSTEES/COMMISSIONERS to be trained on October 28 and October 29, 2000, at the Comfort Inn near the Oakland Airport, Oakland, California. If you would like to contribute to the education of library boards/commissions, and have been a trustee/commisioner for about 3 years or more, can train adults, and can give this training to two or three libraries in one year, please contact Karen Dyer for an application. Reasonable expenses incurred by anyone coming to receive the training or by any trainer who gives a library board presentation will be reimbursed. For the good of the program, economy, and just plain good sense, we are looking for a balance of North and South trustees. Please consider this opportunity.
